Secondary School Banding in Wales December  2012

18th December 2012

Dear Parent

Secondary School Banding in Wales December  2012

We are delighted to inform you that Caldicot School has placed in Band 3 which is a leap of two bands since 2011!

This has acknowledged the significant progress the school has made over the last three years in the key indicators and places the school in the top 25% of schools in Wales for the Level 2 threshold including English and Mathematics.

This achievement recognises the motivation and determination of our pupils in attaining 5 or more A* - C GCSE grades, as well as the commitment and dedication of all staff at the school in supporting pupils to achieve their full potential.

Yours sincerely,

July 2012
End of Term Letter from Headteacher

On Thursday 19th July the following letter was issued from the Headteacher by email, and posted out to those who have not provided the school with an email address.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As the academic year draws to a close, may I take this opportunity to thank you and your child for your continued support of the school, our aims and our mission. I would like to thank you for your valued observations within our self-evaluation programme and as a listening school we take very seriously views and recommendations made by the pupils and parents to me and the staff.

As always, we are sorry to say goodbye to long serving teachers who depart from us through promotion, relocation or retirement and we thank them for their service to the school, which include, Mr Alan Potter, Mrs Alison Blackaby, Mrs Moyanne Monday, Mrs Lyn Thomas, Mrs Sue Rawlings, Mrs Fay Middleton, Mr Allan Lavelle, Mr Steve Titlow, and Mrs Alison Shuttleworth.

In addition Mr Clive Haines our site coordinator will be retiring after 27 years of excellent service to the school and we wish him and happy and healthy retirement.

The year has again been busy and exciting, with new opportunities in many areas.

Our pupils continue to be the stars, as evidenced in a variety of areas in:

* Music and Drama.
* Sporting activities.
* Community service activities.
* Academic achievement within departments.

The school was delighted to be awarded the CPD quality mark in June. Caldicot School is now one of three schools only to possess this award in Wales

The Young Playwrights festival on the 10th and 11th July was an excellent example of the budding young talent that this school possesses.

We are delighted that so many past pupils have   received outstanding results in their degree examinations, examples of these are:

Ashley Price                1st in Biology at Swansea.
Daniel Thomas              1st in Computing at Swansea.
Rebecca Carlson         1st  UWIC  Sport
Ruth Cornelius         1st   Theology  Bristol
Tazine Bogue           1st – English Literature – Cardiff
Rhys Davies                 1st Film & Video from Glamorgan
Daniel Hoffrock            1st in Vehicle Design from Coventry
Tim Shuttleworth        M.Chem Oxon Class 1 from Oxford University

Pupil achievement was again celebrated in our successful Portfolio of Achievement Day for Key Stage 3 on the morning of 16th July, where our guest of honour was Mr Andy Keep, Director of Education, Monmouthshire County Council.

The Enrichment Week with its alternative curriculum programme focused on developing pupils’ skills, team work and the well being agenda.  Mrs Weston, and a very committed team of staff, created an exciting programme for Key Stage 3 pupils from a wide variety of external providers.

Our New Intake Evening for pupils for entry into Year 7 in September 2013 was a very successful evening in 12th July with over 250 parents attending with their children. Mrs Maria Jones, our recently appointed Transition Leader for Years 7 and 8 was delighted with the supportive comments from parents and happy faces on our new recruits. A warm welcome awaits them in September.

May I take this opportunity to thank all staff for their support and contribution to the school during the year. Caldicot School has an excellent team spirit amongst the staff, the pupils and you, the parents.

We were delighted that Mr Alan Potter received distinction for the award of Lifetime Achievement award for Pearson Teachers Awards 2012 and Mr Andrew Jones gained a distinction for the secondary teacher of the year award.

In addition, may I pay tribute to the Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA), a sterling band of committed parents and staff, who strive tirelessly to support our work through raising funds through a varied programme of activities.  The Chair of the PTFA would be delighted to hear from parents who would like to support this worthy team, in any way.

Our school calendar for 2012-13 will be placed on the school website and emailed to parents by 31st July.

I enclose the School Uniform Statement, which was reviewed by the Governing Body on the 10th July and agreed for 2012-13.  Please take a few minutes to refresh your memories of the school uniform for all pupils, so no unnecessary purchases are made during the summer holiday. We pride ourselves on the responsible way our pupils abide by the dress code and thank you for your support of this.

May I remind all pupils and parents that the school cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage to property or vehicles (including bicycles) that are brought onto the school site by pupils, staff or visitors.

During the next academic year,  our new website will become live. Mr Matthew Harris has led  this development with a team of pupils and staff.

Our use of text messaging and the email system to advise parents of forthcoming events has been very successful this year.  It is essential therefore that the school is notified promptly of changes in telephone contact numbers and email addresses by you.  We would be grateful if you could check and return data capture forms and medical visit/consent forms promptly as they are issued to you.  Parents who do not have access to a computer should contact the Office Manager, Mrs Lillie, to ensure that alternative arrangements are made.

School will commence for staff on Monday 3rd September.
School will commence for pupils as follows:
Tuesday 4th September – Year 7 only
Wednesday 5th     September - Year 7 and enrolment for Years 12 and 13
Thursday 6th September – Years 7 to 11 & Year 13 attend school as normal (no Year 12)
Friday 7th September – all pupils attend school as normal

On behalf of the Governing Body, may I wish you a very restful summer holiday and look forward to working in partnership with you again in September 2012.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Susan Gwyer-Roberts

Public Health Wales information letter

1st May 2012

Measles Alert

There is currently an increased level of circulating measles virus in the community, which gives rise to increased risk of infection of children and young people who have not been fully immunised against the disease with two doses of MMR vaccine.

Public Health Wales is continuing to investigate the outbreak at Ysgol Eifionydd, Porthmadog, where more than 50 cases of measles have now been notified. The majority of cases are older primary or young secondary school children who have either had no MMR vaccination or only one dose.

Dr Gill Richardson, Director of Public Health for Aneurin Bevan Health Board (ABHB), has warned that while uptake of the MMR vaccine in our area continues to fall short of the target, a similar outbreak could easily be seen locally.

All children need to receive two doses of the MMR vaccination, which protects against mumps and rubella as well as measles.  Until 95 per cent of children have received two doses of the vaccine, there is still a risk that measles outbreaks will happen.

Although children should receive their first dose of MMR at 12 months of age and the second at three years and four months of age, it is never too late to catch up on missed doses.

Dr Richardson said: “To avoid an outbreak in the Gwent area, I am urging parents whose children are not fully vaccinated to speak to their GP, practice nurse, or health visitor as soon as possible.”

Dr Richard Roberts, Head of the Vaccine Preventable Disease Programme of Public Health Wales, added: “Measles is highly contagious, spreads very easily, and can be extremely serious”.

About one in every 15 people who have measles will develop more serious complications, which can include fits and brain damage.

Measles can be fatal in rare cases and there have been two deaths in the UK from measles in recent years.

“The outbreak in North Wales continues to make children very ill.  If this kind of outbreak can happen there, it can happen in any school in Wales.

Overseas travel is a major factor in the international spread of the measles virus. Europe is currently experiencing a large and ongoing outbreak of measles, with over 30,000 cases a year, particularly affecting teenagers and young adults. France, Germany, Italy and Spain, all popular holiday destinations, have each experienced large outbreaks.

Children do not even have to travel to affected countries to be at risk but may come into contact with others who have travelled abroad and returned to Wales with infectious diseases.

MMR is proven to be a safe and effective vaccine; it is the only way to protect children against Measles. MMR vaccination is available at your Dr’s surgery.

If you:

• think your child has not received two doses of MMR vaccine

• do not know whether your child has received two doses of MMR vaccine

please ask your practice nurse or Dr. to check your child’s vaccination record and make an appointment to receive MMR vaccination if it is due.

If you would like further information about measles, MMR or the national childhood vaccination schedule, please visit the Vaccine Preventable Disease Programme’s website at http://www.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/888/home

April 2012
Absence Line discontinued

Caldicot School has been using a software package called “Truancy Call” for nearly 2 years now, which produces a list of pupils who have not received a mark at registration or for Period 1, and allows parents/guardians to be quickly and easily contacted using an automated telephone system.

This is proving a very successful way to check on pupil attendance, and as a result the existing telephone absence line (where you call the school and press 1 to record an absence) will be discontinued at Easter break.

From Monday 23rd April, all parents will be contacted automatically if their child/ward has no mark for registration or Period 1.  There will be no need for a parent to contact the school beforehand; instead please respond when prompted by our reminder call or text.

Should you wish to contact the school to discuss an attendance or absence issue with a member of staff, please feel free to do so in the usual manner, by calling 01291 426436.

It is very important that the school has correct contact information on our system in order to be able to get in touch with you.  Data Capture Sheets are issued termly, but we require you to contact the school with updated email addresses or telephone numbers at your earliest opportunity if these have changed.

Regards/Cofion,

Amanda Lillie

National Banding Letter from Governors

Dear Parent/Guardian and Pupil,

You may know about the Welsh Governments publication of the new national banding system for all schools in Wales. Caldicot School has been placed in Band 5, which indicates need for improvement. We are obviously very disappointed at this and we are writing to reassure you about the measures we are already taking to address these issues.

It is important to say that the school wholeheartedly supports the Welsh Government’s strategy to raise standards in all schools in Wales and its commitment to provide resources to achieve this. However it is important that you are aware of the school’s  many achievements in a variety of areas, including but not exclusively academic standards. We would not want this new system to overshadow our achievements.

While we recognise that there is always scope for improvement, we are pleased that the school’s GCSE results have been steadily rising in the last nine years. The number of pupils gaining 5*A-C GCSE has risen by 50% during 2003-2011. The banding system is based on a 3 year analysis.

Under the new banding system the proportion of pupils entitled to free school meals is taken into account. This measure is a complex one open to different interpretations.

Caldicot School is proud of its highly successful LEA designated unit for pupils with additional learning needs. These young people make excellent progress in so many areas and achieve excellent results in their examinations. However these achievements do not feature in the banding criteria.

Our most recent Estyn Inspection in 2007 gave the school 4 grade 1s and 3 grade 2s, and we received recognition for outstanding progress and leadership.

We have met with Mrs Gwyer-Roberts to discuss the Welsh Government’s new priorities for educating our young people and, be assured, Caldicot School has a leadership that would be difficult to match at any school. The governors continue to have complete confidence in our staff and we have no doubts that this school will continue to provide pupils with a sound educational experience to enable them to achieve their full potential.

Yours sincerely

Letter from HT re: Strike Action 30.11.11

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As you are probably aware from media reports, the following professional associations ,the National Union of Teachers (NUT), Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), National Association of Schoolmasters/Union of Women Teachers (NAS/UWT) and Unison, have balloted their  members for industrial action.

The school has been  informed by the NUT, ATL, NAS/UWT and Unison representatives  that industrial action will  be taken by their members on the 30th November.

In discussion with the Chair of Governors, the following arrangements will operate for the day of 30th November.

Pupils:  Key Stage 5, 4 & 3
The school will be closed to all pupils.

A risk assessment has now been completed by senior managers.  Information from Monmouthshire County Council has made it clear that the school cannot use supply staff or agency staff to cover the classes of staff taking industrial action.

Staff
The school will be open for all staff who are not taking part in industrial action.

Pupils will be provided with a work programme for the day with recommendations on how they can use the day effectively to get their studies up to date.   This information will be on the website by 29th November.

Thank you for your co-operation and understanding in this matter with  these circumstances which are beyond our control.

Yours sincerely

Language Event at Cardiff University

Languages: Your Passport to Success

Saturday 26th November 10 - 12.30 at Cardiff University

If your child is about to make Y9 options, is thinking about AS or A level subjects, or is trying to decide whether university might be the next step, then this event will help you all make an informed decision.

The aim is to demonstrate how important it is that young people today are aware of the benefits of language skills and how these valuable skills not not only offer an enjoyable learning experience, but how they will help to make them more employable when they come to enter the workplace.

At the event you will hear from Lecturers and Senior Management from the School of European Studies at Cardiff University who will introduce languages.  A representative from the Cardiff University Careers Service will present information about the employability of language graduates and will give examples of graduate destinations.  In addition to this, a Business Speaker will talk about their current role using languages in the workplace and how their language skills have assisted them throughout their career.  Finally, you will learn about the opportunities that undergraduate students have to study and work abroad with the Erasmus student mobility programme.

There will also be an opportunity to ask questions so that you can find out even more about the benefits of studying languages and what life at Cardiff University is like.

If you would like to register to attend this event, please contact the Routes into Languages Cymru team on 029 2026 5400 or email routescymru@ciltcymru.org.uk.  The full programme for the event and directions to the Optometry Building at Cardiff University can be found on our website www.routesintolanguages.ac.uk/cymru.

Letter from Headteacher, Nov 2011

Dear Parent /Guardian,

Welcome back to the second half of the Autumn term, after a very successful start to our new school year.

Year 7 pupils have settled in very quickly and all are participating in  the range of extra curricular and curricular opportunities that exist. A very successful information evening for Year 7 parents was held on the 28th September.

Our Open Evening for prospective pupils and parents for September 2012 took place on Thursday 20th October, when over four hundred visitors  visited all departments to see  pupils and staff at work on projects and activities.

Enrolment into the sixth form continues to flourish with over 230 pupils returning to pursue courses at A/S and A level,  a tribute to the success of our results at GCSE at Key Stage 4.

We were delighted with our “A” level results again this year.  The majority of these pupils have gained their places at their chosen universities, whilst many moved to work based training and employment.  We look forward to welcoming these pupils to our Award Ceremony on December 16th to receive their certificates.

Our Open Evening for prospective pupils and parents for September 2012 took place on Thursday 20th October

We are delighted to announce that Caldicot School is receiving significant ICT investment from Monmouthshire County Council. The investment will be in excess of £350,000 and will enable the school to offer superior  technology support equivalent to any secondary school in the UK. We are currently benefiting from the following:
• Super fast broadband access.
• Latest technology installed for the network infrastructure.
• Wireless facility across the whole school.

As this technology upgrade is embedded into school life further improvements will be made and the school will be receiving 500+ laptops. These improvements will enable parents & pupils to have far greater accessibility to school resources online to support teaching and learning, attendance, reports, behaviour, homework.  Inevitably, there have been some initial installation problems, but the LEA is working industriously to overcome these for us.

We were delighted to meet over 160 parents at the Year 11 Information Evening for Parents on the 20th October.  The presentation focussed on how the school can help parents support their children in the next seven months before their GCSE exams.

Some diary events to share with you.

Parents Evening for Year  7 :    1st  December
  Academic Mentoring Day:          9th December

Rehearsals are now in full swing for the school’s annual musical production, which this year will be The Sound of Music.  This will be a superb show, knowing the talent of our pupils and the professionalism of our Director of Theatre Studies, Miss Ashton and Miss Axon, Director of Music. I know tickets will sell quickly.  The show will run from the 14th – 16th  March, so my advice – book early to avoid disappointment!

May I take this opportunity to thank you for your support of the school, and to thank pupils for the pride they take in their appearance and their behaviour.

With my best wishes

Yours sincerely

Llwybro-Routes data protection procedures

Further to my letter of the 28th September 2007, I am writing to set our Llwybro-Routes data protection procedures following the loss of data about child benefit claimants by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) reported in the news recently.

Please be assured that Llwybro-Routes takes data protection issues very seriously.  In addition to our obligations under the data protection act, the following steps are taken to ensure the security of the data at all times:

• Only the contractor who visits the school (Menter a Busnes) and the Welsh Assembly ever handle the completed forms.
• The forms are transported by Menter a Busnes to Welsh Assembly once collected from the school.  No third parties (such as the postal service or courier firms) are ever used to transport the forms.
• On receipt at the Welsh Assembly, the data is inputted onto a secure database by a Welsh Assembly team.  Again, no third parties are involved in the process.
• Once the data has been inputted and is stored electronically, the paper forms are shredded.
• Only employees of the Welsh Assembly have access to the database and the number of staff who can access the data is kept to a minimum (currently limited to three members of staff for record maintenance only).
• The data is used to contact students according to the options they have selected when they complete the registration forms.
• Where statistical data is published, it is only in an aggregated form from which individual students cannot be identified.
• Individual students can access only their own records via a secure internet connection at www.llwybro-routes.co.uk

I hope this information allays any concerns staff or parents may have over the collection of students’ personal information.  If you have any remaining concerns or would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Anthony Jarrett
Llwybro Executive

Healthy Schools Award

Caldicot School was accredited with the Healthy Schools Award on the 18th November.  This accreditation was a result of a number of activities and initiatives that have taken place over the last year and beyond:

  • Healthy Eating – the school community now benefits from healthier options in line with the guidelines set down by the Schools Food Trust.  There is now less fat, sugar and salt in food being sold and more fibre in the form of fresh fruit and vegetables.  Confectionery and carbonated drinks are no longer sold and vendors have been removed.  The tendering process for the new catering contract made an efficient transition to the healthier options that are now available
  • Litter – the school also enjoys a tidier school campus as a result of the new arrangements introduced at lunch times and recycling schemes that were already in place
  • Physical activity – this  continues to increase as more games are introduced at lunchtimes and more pupils are encouraged to walk or cycle to school, as highlighted in our travel plan
  • Comenius Project – international links and visits continue to take place, specifically looking at how other countries combat pollution
  • Peer Support Group – this continues to be a well regarded initiative that fosters the emotional health and well being of our pupils
  • PHSE – our school values continue to be demonstrated and developed in these sessions and in assemblies
  • School Council / PLG – pupil voice is a strong feature within the school and pupil views continue to contribute towards decisions made for charitable events and towards the refinement of school policies and procedures
  • The wider curriculum – much work continues to be developed within subjects for “Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship” (ESDGC)

Many staff and pupils have contributed to achieving this prestigious award. The trophy will be displayed along with our existing school trophies in school entrances shortly.

Registered Inspection Information

18th October 2007

Dear Parent / Guardian

INSPECTION OF CALDICOT SCHOOL
DATE OF INSPECTION: 26TH – 30TH NOVEMBER 2007
NOTICE OF MEETING FOR PARENT/CARERS
8TH NOVEMBER 2007 AT 6.30 PM

As you may already know, this school is soon to be inspected as part of the programme of regular school inspections arranged by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector for Education and Training in Wales.  The inspection will be carried out by a team led by Mr P Carter, a registered inspector.

This letter is to invite you to attend a meeting with the registered inspector which is being held before the inspection.  The meeting is open to all parents/carers of pupils at the school.  The governors and staff will not be present during the meeting unless they also have children at the school.  The purpose of the meeting is for you to tell the registered inspector your views about the school and how it works so that these views can be included in the inspection.  Although the registered inspector will want to hear your views, and will, attempt to answer your questions, he or she will not be in a position to comment on your views, which will be taken account of in the inspection.  The registered inspector will also be able to tell you about the inspection.

The registered inspector has also asked us to send a questionnaire to all parents/carers for them to complete and return.  The questionnaire has been sent out via pupils.  The questionnaire is additional to the parents/carers’ meeting, and covers much the same ground.  Please do fill it in whether or not you can attend the meeting.  The inspection team will take your comments into account.  Estyn may also use the questionnaire responses to make general statistical analysis of parents/carers’ views about schools and/or education.  If you want to write in more detail to the registered inspector, please do so, preferably before the meeting.  The questionnaire and any letters should be sent in a sealed envelope to:

Mr P Carter, registered inspector, c/o the school.

I hope you will be able to come to the meeting.

Yours sincerely

Mr P Nurcombe
