GIFMAT is an acronym for GIFted (exceptionally able students in the top 2.5% of each Year group), More Able (the next 20% of each Year group) and Talented (with specific specialist talents).
Extraction lessons take place once per three weeks so that exceptionally able pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 can experience cross-curriculat enrichment/extension work.
GIFMAT Club once per half-term provides opportunites for able children in Year 6 to develop their thinking skills in cross-curricular contexts.
Enrichment Days take place two or three times per year. These provide opportunities for the most able children in our Feeder Schools to receive enrichment experiences in a variety of subject areas.
There are regular meetings, (once per half term), between GIFMAT co-ordinators in our cluster to discuss identification of and provision for the most able pupils in our schools.
All eight Feeder Schools are visited, with extension work being taught to a selected group of the most able children.
Residential Schools of Excellence have been held for Year 9 and Years 10/11.These provide an invaluable opportunity for able children in all the Monmouthshire Secondary schools to meet, work together and receive extension/enrichment teaching at a very high level.
The school is a member of NACE, (National Association for Able Children in Education), and has been at the forefront of developing the new Quality Standards document, Meeting the Challenge, which has been adopted by WAG as the standards for teaching and learning in all Welsh schools.
It is our aspiration that our school will work with our cluster of feeder schools to implement the NACE Challenge Award.
We intend to develop a wider range of clubs that give opportunities for able children to extend their horizons and skills.
We would like to develop enrichment and sponsorship links with local businesses and industrial firms.
